Who can purchase a Medicare Supplement Insurance (Medigap) Policy in Nebraska?
There are requirements that need to be met in order to buy a Medigap policy in the state of Nebraska.
Medigap Coverage Eligibility in Nebraska:
- Covered under Medicare Part A
- Covered under Medicare Part B
- 65 years old and older* in NE
- Be Approved by Insurance Company
- Pay Medigap Policy Premiums
You have to have Medicare Part A and Part B. If you are covered by one and not the other, you aren’t eligible to purchase a Medicare Supplement policy. Medicare Part A is given to you if you are a citizen, worked, and paid taxes. Medicare Part B is given to you when you are turning 65. The 2016 standard premium for Part B is $121.80. This amount is automatically deducted from your monthly Social Security check.
Nebraska requires you to be 65 or older in order to purchase a Medigap Policy. If you’re 64 and turning 65, you can purchase a policy prior to your 65th birthday. The effective date can start the first day of your 65th birthday month. For example, if you turn 65 on May 15th, your Medigap coverage can start May 1st.
Are Medicare Supplemental Plans Offered to People Under 65 with Part A and B?
Unfortunately, Medicare Supplement Plans in Nebraska aren’t offered to people under 65. If you have Medicare Part A and Part B, you cannot have Medigap coverage start until your 65th birthday month.
Some people get Medicare Supplements confused with Medicare Advantage Plans.
Medicare Advantage (Health) Plans are offered to individuals, if they have Part A and Part B, and live within the plans service area. Learn more about Medicare Health Plans.
Some states do offer Medicare Supplemental Insurance to people under 65 who are on Medicare Part A and Part B, Nebraska isn’t one of them.
For Nebraska Residents with Preexisting Conditions | Medigap Policy Enrollment
The best time to buy a Medicare Supplement Insurance policy in Nebraska is during “open enrollment” or if you have a “guarantee issue right.” Open Enrollment is when you are turning 65 and last for six months. You have guarantee issue into a Medigap Plan F with no health questions asked. Medigap insurance companies have to accept you into the plan and cannot dis-enroll you for past or current health conditions.
The following cannot be asked during the ‘Guarantee Issue Right’ period:
- Provider Information
